Focusing on the ‘TE’ in STEM

The consensus has reached near unanimity that K-12 educators must focus more heavily on courses in science, technology, engineering and math to adequately prepare Virginia’s students for the future. And the future portends job growth in these fields.

Where that unanimity stops is in questioning whether we have done enough to answer the call. A new, bipartisan report from the Miller Center’s Milstein Commission on New Manufacturing offers a viable improvement to K-12 education across the state: skills certifications for high school students in technology and engineering.
